SUTTON CONSERVATION SOCIETY – ARCHAEOLOGICAL DIG PROJECT

EXCAVATION DATES 2004

DATES FOR YOUR DIARIES…..

After many months in the planning, we are now in a position to publish our schedule of excavation dates at the site during 2004 (please see attached).  Volunteers are welcome to join us on these dates, subject to the conditions stated below and the numbers that can be accommodated on site.

MANDATORY CONDITIONS:

If you would like to participate in the dig for as much or as little as you’d like, there are a number of conditions that need to be fulfilled.

·        We regret that children are not allowed to participate at the site for Health & Safety reasons.

·        You will need to be a paid-up member of the Sutton Conservation Society (our parent organisation) so that you are covered for public liability insurance.  We can provide membership forms if you are not already a member, a small fee is payable for annual membership.

·         Unless you have a qualification, or former significant training and experience in archaeology, you must attend a one-day classroom training session to equip you with the basic skills necessary to work on site, before you are let loose on the archaeology.

·         At all times you will follow the direction of the professional archaeologists on site, or nominated SCS-ADP committee member.

·         You will only attend site on the days that you have been nominated by the committee member organising the rota.  Depending upon demand we may need to dictate attendance days, but we will try to accommodate your needs.

We stress that this is a serious commitment from you if you decide that you wish to participate, we will rely on you to turn up when you say you will.  If you don’t, then you may be stopping someone else from taking part.

CLASSROOM TRAINING DAYS : SUNDAY 4TH APRIL 2004 OR SATURDAY 5TH JUNE 2004

This will be a full day training session to teach you the basic skills necessary to work on site.  The training will be running on two dates in 2004: the first is on Sunday 4th April, but if you are unable to make this course, it will be run again on Saturday 5th June.  As stated previously, you must attend this course before you can excavate on site.  Further details will be available shortly.

WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW IF I WANT TO PARTICIPATE?

If you have already let us know that you are interested in participating then a committee member (either Joan Batten or Tim Smith) will be getting in touch with you shortly to answer any queries you may have and to talk through your availability.  If you have any other queries please e-mail sutton.adp@btinternet.com or if you would like to speak to someone please contact a committee member.
